What should I wear?
Wear light and comfortable clothing that is easy to move in. Nothing too flowing that will get in the way. You will probably get quite hot during your practice, so layers that can be removed is a good idea so the skin can breathe. Avoid dangling jewellery that will interfere with your practice. Practice is performed in bare feet so footwear is removed on arrival.
Do I need to bring anything else along to class?
We do provide non-slip yoga mats, although if you have your own feel free to bring it along. We recommend you bring a towel and water for the end of the class.
Can I eat before practice?
It is best to perform Astanga when the stomach is not busy with digesting food, for the energy this takes and for the obvious issue of comfort when doing particular postures. If you can manage we recommend not eating a meal for at least 2 hours beforehand or a light snack 1 hr prior to class
Are there any times I should avoid practicing?
Women should not practice inverted postures when they are menstruating. Women who are regular practitioners (3-6 times per week) should take the first three days of their menstrual cycle off.
Students with a regular practice (3-6 times per week) should also take rest on new and full moon.
Pregnant women who have been practicing with us will have their sequence modified depending on their stage of pregnancy. We do not however offer classes to pregnant women who have not done Astanga before, as the Introductory course does not cater for the necessary modifications.
If you have any pre-existing injuries discuss these with us personally so we can make an evaluation of them based on your circumstances. Common complaints such as minor back and knee problems can be readily accommodated, as can certain medical conditions such as high or low blood pressure.
